Tobias Chirwa PhD
Professor Tobias Chirwa is the Head, School of Public Health. He is also the Programme Director for the Wellcome Trust/AESA funded DELTAS Africa Sub-Sahara Africa Consortium for Advanced Biostatistics training (SSACAB) and co-directs the Fogarty training grant on Implementation Science and Advanced Cohort Analyses, together with the WHO/TDR Implementation Research. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Malawi (UNIMA), MSc in Biostatistics from the University of Hasselt and PhD at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
Prior to his current position, Prof Chirwa was the Head of the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School; lectured and held several positions of responsibility at UNIMA and was a Research Fellow in Medical Statistics at LSHTM.
Prof. Chirwa is an experienced public health researcher and biostatistician, with special research interest in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and maternal and child health. His biostatistics areas of interest include longitudinal and survival data analysis, measurement error and nonparametric inference. He has contributed to over 85 peer-reviewed publications and has initiated and completed research with the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Centre for Health Policy, MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt) and Wits Health Consortium. He has taken data management and statistical responsibility for more than 30 research projects.
